Horticultural selection from Frangula californica from san Bruno Mountain south of san Francisco. The Mound San Bruno coffeeberry is a small low growing, evergreen shrub that has stunning red twigs and bark, offset by intense green foliage. This shrub is a cultivar from the San Bruno Mountain area, and is ideal for small, 5'ft x 5'ft cool spaces in the garden or hedge. San Bruno requires minimal water and is less tolerant of heat and drought than other varieties of coffeeberry. The shrub flowers in the mid to late spring, with berries fading from bright red to black in the fall. Grows best in sandy, coarse-grained or other fast draining soil. Prefers sun or part shade in coastal sites, and part shade or shade in inland sites.
