Delphinium cardinale is a species in the Ranunculaceae (Buttercup) family known by the common names Scarlet Larkspur. This wildflower is found primarily in the southern half of California and Baja California, where it grows on coastal and inland chaparral slopes. This tall larkspur grows on an erect stem which can exceed two meters in height. The basal leaves are divided into many narrow lobes. The top of the thin stem is occupied by many widely spaced flowers, each at the end of a pedicel several centimeters long. Each flower has scarlet red sepals which are generally curled forward into a bowl shape. The petals are also scarlet, except for the top two which are scarlet marked with bright yellow blotches. The flower may be 3 centimeters wide and the same in length, including the spur. This is a very showy plant when in bloom that works well at the back of a bed or among low chaparral shrubs. Due to its height and thin stem it may need support when in bloom. It will die back to the ground in late summer and should be kept dry, reemerging in spring if conditions have been suitable.

Channel Islands tree poppy (Dendromecon harfordii) is a flowering shrub or small tree and one of the most popular native plants with gardeners. It blooms with an abundance of  bright yellow flowers that contrast with sparse blue-gray oval leaves on  thin, branching stems. The flowering season is winter to spring but throughout most of the year, it can be covered in showy flowers. 

Channel Island Tree Poppy is spectacularly beautiful, easy to grow, and very fast growing. It can grow to 6 feet in two years. It likes full sun and well-draining soils, though it also does well in dry part-shade. It likes gentle slopes and flats. It is very tolerant of summer water for its first two years, but when mature, it's best to reduce it to 1x / month or eliminate supplemental water completely, especially if the plant is in partial shade.

Bush Poppy (Dendromecon rigida) is an attractive compact shrub native to California and Baja California. It is covered in petite, buttercup-like yellow flowers during the winter-spring blooming season. Bush Poppy is a fast-growing shrub that maintains a rounded form with light pruning. The Bush Poppy?s narrow, grayish-green leaves are evergreen, providing year-round color in the landscape, even when not in bloom.

This plant is robust and easy to grow when planted in the right dry, sunny conditions. It is commonly found on dry, rocky slopes and is known to be a fire-following plant. In the garden, it does best when planted in full sun in very well-draining soil. The Bush Poppy needs little to no supplemental irrigation once it is established, making it an appealing choice for a waterwise garden.

Tufted Hair-grass or Tussock grass (Deschampsia cespitosa or Deschampsia caespitosa) is a wild plant from the grass family (Poaceae). Distribution of this grass species is widespread including the eastern and western extremes of North America, parts of South America and Eurasia. In California it is most commonly found in the central and northern portions of the state, including the Coast Ranges and Sierras. It is found in coastal prairie habitat and mountain meadows, along with other native grasses such as Fescues (Festuca spp.) and Needlegrass (Stipa spp.). It is most often found in moist to very wet areas such as freshwater or saltwater marsh, riparian areas, and woodland/forest habitats.

Dicentra nevadensis is a species of flowering plant in Dicentra, the genus containing the bleeding-hearts. Its common names include Sierra bleeding-heart and Tulare County bleeding-heart. This wildflower is endemic to California, where it is known only from gravelly outcroppings in the Sierra Nevada peaks of Tulare and Fresno Counties. The plant has a short stem, and becomes visible as bunches of long petioles emerging from the ground, each with a leaf highly divided into lobes and pointy leaflets. Alongside the leaves are tall flower clusters, each holding a dangling bunch of dull whitish, pinkish, or yellowish-brown bleeding-heart flowers. Each hanging flower has a pair of curving petals which curl back to reveal the looping inner petals. When dried, the flowers turn black. The fruit is a capsule one or two centimeters long. This species is sometimes treated as a subspecies of the western bleeding-heart, Dicentra formosa.

Dichelostemma ida-maia is a species of flowering plant known as firecracker flower. It is native to northern California and southern Oregon, where it grows in mountain forests, woodlands, and coastal meadows. It is also widely cultivated as an ornamental plant for its showy crimson and cream flowers. This is a perennial herb growing from a corm which erects a tall, naked stem topped with an umbel of six to 20 flowers. Each flower is a cylindrical red tube two to three centimeters long. The tip of each flower lobe curls back to reveal a shiny white underside. The curls rim the mouth of the tubular flower in a corona, surrounding the small anthers and a stalked ovary. The flower hangs when it is in anthesis and holds itself erect as the fruit develops. One umbel may have some hanging flowers and some erect fruiting flowers at the same time.

Mimulus hybrid. Eleanor Monkeyflower is a horticultural selection by Yerba Buena Nursery from one of the native monkeyflowers of California. Eleanor forms a dense shrub about 3 feet tall and wide and takes sun on the coast and light shade inland. This selection makes a veritable bouquet all summer of buttery yellow flowers edged with white, with orange markings in the center. As with all monkeyflowers, consistent watering can hurt the plant; supplement its water for a month after planting time, then let it alone. A splash of water once or twice a month in the hottest parts of summer will allow Eleanor to keep its leaves all year. Cut back the whole plant to about 8" high after flowering, and give it a good deep watering. It will regrow and rebloom. Diplacus 'Sunshine' is thought to be a natural hybrid of Mimulus aurantiacus and was selected for its abundant, large yellow blooms and vigorous growth habit. The cheerful flowers contrast beautifully against the monkeyflower's rich green foliage. 'Sunshine' monkeyflower grows in a low mounding, compact form about 1-2 feet in height. The sunny yellow flowers brighten up borders and rock gardens, flowering almost year round in a coastal setting. Inland the flowering season is not quite so long. We recommend trimming and pinching back to maintain shape and maximize flowering. This plant is suitable for containers as well as flower borders, pathways, hummingbird and butterfly habitats, and will do well in full sun or part shade.
