Rosada Coral Bells is an Alum Root hybrid (H. maxima x H. sanguinea) that is on the UC Davis Arboretum's "All stars" list due to its toughness and its dependable 3 month long blooming period. Rosada has medium green leaves that can reach 4 inches across and has numerous 14 inch tall, light pink flower spikes that appear in spring and keep going into summer. The foliage can reach 12 to 18 inches tall and form clumping rosettes 1 to 2 feet wide. Rosada tolerates clay well and, once established, infrequent water. This plant is a beautiful accent for a shade or butterfly garden, along shady borders and in containers. It is particularly effective in masses. Recommended for use under oaks. Heuchera hirsutissima is a species of flowering plant in the saxifrage family known by the common name shaggy-haired alumroot. It is endemic to the San Jacinto Mountains of Riverside County, California, where it grows on rocky slopes between 4,000 and 10,000 ft. While uncommon in the wild and normally found at higher elevations, this species is cultivated as an attractive garden flower and can be used at lower elevations. This is a rhizomatous perennial herb with small, lobed, rounded leaves. It produces an erect, hairy flower cluster which bears light pink flowers.

Island alum root (Heuchera maxima) is a perennial flowering plant in the saxifrage family. In gardens it is valued as a groundcover for both its foliage and its flowers that hummingbirds love. The  rounded green leaves grow in a broad patch and remain low. In winter to spring, tiny white-pink flowers bloom in frothy clusters towards the top of tall erect stems that rise above the leaves and may reach to about 2 feet.  

This plant performs best in coastal gardens, where it can take full sun to part shade. In inland gardens, it may require full shade and additional water. It looks good in woodland gardens.  It is adaptable to different types of soil but prefers sandy/rocky soil with good drainage. 

In the wild, this plant is endemic to three of the eight Channel Islands of California, where it grows on cliffs and canyon walls. It is rare due to its limited distribution. 

Heuchera micrantha is a species of flowering plant in the saxifrage family known by the common name crevice alumroot. It is native to western North America from British Columbia to California, where it grows on rocky slopes and cliffs. Within California it is found primarily in the central and northern Coast Ranges and Sierra foothills.This plant is quite variable in appearance. There are a number of wild and cultivated Varieties: The leaves are lobed and usually coated in glandular hairs. They are green to reddish-green or purple-green in color and may have very long, gland-dotted petioles. The plant produces an erect flower cluster up to a meter high bearing many clusters of pink, white, or greenish flowers. Each rounded flower has fleshy, hairy lobes tipped with tiny petals and protruding stamens and stigma.

Heuchera rubescens is a species in the Saxifragaceae (Saxifrage) family. Its common name is Pink Alumroot. It is native to a large part of the western United States and northern Mexico. In California is is found primarily in the Sierras with scattered locations in the Klamath region and southern California. The plant grows as a low rosette of basal leaves from which the inflorescence arises, to 6 inches in height. All Heucheras have nodding bell-shaped flowers, leading to the common name Coral Bells. Aspects of the plant vary with region where it is native. There is one recognized variety, var. versicolor, a rare species that is found only in the mountains of southern California. In the garden it requires regular water and afternoon shade.

Hoita macrostachya is a species of legume known by the common name large leatherroot. It is native to California and Baja California where it can be found in moist areas of a number of habitat types. This is a hairy, hairy perennial herb producing a tall, branching stem approaching two meters in maximum height. The sparse, widely spaced leaves are each made up of three leaflets up to 10 centimeters long each attached to a long petiole. The leaflet blades are hairy. The plant produces many clublike raceme flower clusters on sturdy stalks from the stem. The flower cluster contains many purplish pealike flowers. The fruit is a hairy, veiny brown legume pod under a centimeter long containing a kidney-shaped seed.

Cream Bush (also called Ocean Spray) is famous for its cascading clusters of fragrant, creamy white flowers. These lovely blooms attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. After blooming, the seeds provide food for birds, and the plant itself provides shelter for birds and small animals.

Hordeum brachyantherum is a species of barley known by the common name meadow barley. It is native to western North America from Alaska to northern Mexico, far eastern Russia, and parts of eastern North America. It can be found in other parts of the world as an introduced species. This is a tufting perennial grass approaching a meter in maximum height. It produces compact, narrow flower clusters 8 to 10 centimeters long and purplish in color. Like other barleys the spikelets come in triplets. It has two small, often sterile lateral spikelets on pedicels and a larger, fertile central spikelet lacking a pedicel.

California Meadow Barley (Hordeum brachyantherum ssp. californicum) is a native grass that grows in northern, southern and central California. It is fast growing and short-lived. It grows in an upright form to a height of 1.6 feet, with active growth during the spring. Flowers are yellow and bloom in the mid spring. Leaves are medium green and deciduous. It tends to grow in meadows, pastures and streambanks, at elevations from 0-8500 feet.

Otay Mtn. Lotus is a rare native perennial herb in the Fabaceae (Legume) family. It is one of two recognized varieties of Hosackia crassifolia found in California. It is found primarily in the Otay Mountain area of San Diego County and adjacent Baja, although there is also a disjunct population reported in San Luis Obispo County. The more common var. crassifolia also occurs in the same area of San Diego. Otay Mountain Lotus tends to grow in chaparral or disturbed areas at elevations from 1,000 to 4,000 feet. This plant is rarely used in gardens, a little information is available on its cultural tolerances and requirements.
