Atriplex parishii is an uncommon species of saltbush known by the common names Parish's saltbush and Parish's brittlescale. It is native to central and southern California where it can occasionally be found along the immediate coastline, and the Channel Islands. Its distribution extended historically into the western edges of the Mojave Desert and Baja California and it may still exist there. This is a plant of saline and alkaline soils, such as those on dry lakebeds and ephemeral vernal pools. There are five varieties of the plant, each growing in a separate and disjunct region of the species' distribution; some varieties are known only from the Central Valley.

Atriplex parryi is a species of saltbush known by the common name Parry's saltbush. It is native to the deserts and plateaus of eastern California and western Nevada. It is a plant of alkaline and saline soils in habitats such as salt flats, where it grows with other halophytes such as Nitrophila. This is a small, stiff, spiny shrub growing to a maximum height near 50 centimeters. Its scaly, sharp-pointed stems tangle to give the plant a generally rounded form. It is covered densely in small gray-green oval-shaped leaves up to 2 centimeters long. The shrub is dioecious, with individuals producing either male or female flowers. Both flower types are borne in long clusters interspersed with leaves. This species blooms from May to August.

Atriplex patula L. (Spear Saltbush; Common Orache; Spear Orach; Spreading Orach) is a ruderal, circumboreal species of annual herbaceous plants in the genus Atriplex naturalized in many temperate regions. Atriplex patula appears to have been a rather recent introduction in North America from Eurasia, not arriving perhaps until sometime in the early to mid-eighteenth century.

Atriplex polycarpa (Allscale, Cattle spinach, Allscale saltbush, Cattle saltbush) is a plant in the Amaranthaceae family. It is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.

Atriplex pusilla is a species of saltbush known by the common names smooth saltbush and dwarf orach. It is native to the Northwestern United States from California to Idaho, where it grows in saline and alkaline soils, such as those near hot springs and ephemeral ponds. This is a small annual herb producing a stiff, branching, reddish-green stem which approaches 30 centimeters in maximum height. The thick, fleshy leaves are rounded in shape and less than 2 centimeters long. The tiny flowers are borne in pairs or singly. Atriplex serenana is a species of saltbush known by the common names leafscale and stinking orach. It is native to California and Baja California, where it grows in saline and alkaline soils such as those on alkali flats and beach bluffs. This is a mat-forming annual herb producing scaly stems up to a meter long. The toothed leaves are 1 to 4 centimeters long. The flowers are generally borne in hard clusters along the stem and there is sometimes a spikelike flower cluster of male flowers at the end of the stem. There are two varieties of this species. The rarer of the two, Davidson's saltscale (var. davidsonii), is limited to the coastline of southern California and Baja California.

It is endemic to California, where it grows in dry habitat with saline soils, such as salt flats. Its distribution includes the Mojave Desert, the Central Valley, and surrounding mountain ranges. This is a grayish or whitish brambly shrub with erect branching stems growing to a maximum height near 2 meters. The tangled branches are stiff and tipped with spiny points. The leaves are oval in shape and less than 3 centimeters in length. The shrub is dioecious, with male and female individuals. The male flowers are small clusters in the leaf axils. The female flowers are solitary or borne in small clusters, and are enclosed in scaly leafs which become spherical as the fruit grows within.

Atriplex truncata is a species of saltbush known by the common names wedgeleaf saltbush, wedgescale, and wedge orach, native to western North America from British Columbia to California and to New Mexico. It grows in montane to desert habitats with saline soils, such as dry lake beds. Atriplex truncata is an annual herb producing erect, angled stems which can be higher than 70 centimeters. Leaves are 1 to 4 centimeters long and wedge-shaped. The stems and herbage are generally very scaly and scurfy. Male and female flowers are produced in small clusters in the leaf axils. Bakersfield smallscale (Atriplex tularensis) is a very rare species of saltbush endemic to Kern County. Only a few individual plants were known at Kern Lake, a dry ephemeral lake bed with alkali soils. But these plants may be another species, and Bakersfield smallscale may be extinct. 

Bakersfield smallscale is an erect, reddish-green or grayish annual herb. The leaves are very small and oval to lance-shaped. Leaves and stem branches are white, scaly, and tough. The male and female flowers are small, hard clusters. The female flowers have bracts that end in a sharp point. The plant is a likely host to moths and butterflies, such as the Western pygmy blue. 

Bakersfield smallscale is listed as endangered on the state level. Agriculture has caused habitat degradation, making conditions too dry for this plant to reproduce successfully. 

Atriplex watsonii is a species of saltbush known by the common name Watson's saltbush, or Watson's orach. It is native to the coastline of California and Baja California, where it grows in areas with saline soils, such as salt marshes and beach scrub, with other salt-tolerant plants such as saltgrass. This is a gray-green to whitish perennial herb with tangled slender stems under a meter in length. It grows in mats up to 3 meters wide. The thick, fleshy, crusty leaves are up to 2.5 centimeters long and generally oval in shape. The plant is dioecious, with individuals bearing either male or female flowers. The male flowers grow in clusters or long spikes, and the female flowers can be found in small clusters in the leaf axils.

Ayenia compacta is a species of shrub in the mallow family known by the common name California ayenia. It is native to California, Arizona, and Baja California, in the Sonoran Desert and its Colorado Desert, and in the sky islands of the Mojave Desert. Ayenia compacta is a small shrub producing many erect, branching stems up to 40 centimeters tall from a taproot. The sparse leaves are oval in shape and edged in dull teeth. The flowers appear in the leaf axils. Each has upcurled sepals in one layer and downcurled petals in a layer just above. Each petal has a threadlike claw. The capsule fruit is a purple-tinted yellow sphere about half a centimeter wide.

Azolla filiculoides (Water Fern) is a species of Azolla, native to warm temperate and tropical regions of the Americas as well as most of the old world including Asia and Australia. It is a floating aquatic fern, with very fast growth, capable of spreading over lake surfaces to give complete coverage of the water in only a few months. Each individual plant is 1-2 centimeter across, green tinged pink, orange or red at the edges, branching freely, and breaking into smaller sections as it grows. It is not tolerant of cold temperatures, and in temperate regions it largely dies back in winter, surviving by means of submerged buds. Like other species of Azolla, it can fix nitrogen from the air.

Baccharis brachyphylla is a North American species of shrubs in the daisy family, known by the common name Shortleaf baccharis or false willow. It is native to the southwestern United States (southern California, southern Nevada, Arizona, southern New Mexico, and western Texas) and northern Mexico (Baja California, Chihuahua, Sonora). It grows in desert habitats such as arroyos and canyons. This is a shrub producing erect, branching green stems up to a meter tall. The leaves are linear or thinly lance-shaped and less than 2 centimetres (0. 79 in) long. The inflorescence is a wide array of flower heads. A dioecious species, the male and female plants produce different flower types which are similar in appearance. The flowers and foliage are glandular. Female flowers yield fruits which are ribbed achenes, each with a fuzzy body 2-3 millimetres (0. 079-0. 118 in) long and a pappus about 5 millimeters long.

Baccharis douglasii is a species of flowering plant in the daisy family known by the common names saltmarsh baccharis and Douglas' baccharis. It is native to California, where it grows in wet places such as salt marshes. Its range may extend into Oregon. This is a rhizomatous perennial herb growing to heights between one and two meters. The lance-shaped leaves are up to about 12 centimeters long and have short winged petioles. The foliage and flower clusters are resinous and sticky. The plants are dioecious, with male plants producing clusters of up to 40 whitish staminate flowers and female plants bearing bunches of up to 150 fluffy whitish pistillate flowers with a hairlike pappus attached to each developing fruit.

Baccharis malibuensis is a rare California species of shrubs in the aster family known by the common name Malibu baccharis. It is endemic to southern California. It was first recognized as a distinct taxon in the Malibu Creek drainage in the Santa Monica Mountains near Malibu. Other populations have since been located in Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego Counties. It grows in chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and oak woodlands. Most of the occurrences contain fewer than 200 individual plants. The species was described to science only in 1995.

Coyote Bush (also called Coyote Brush) is a common California native shrub. It is versatile and adaptable in a wide range of landscape applications. Its short height and spreading habit make this plant a practical choice for groundcover and bank stabilization. It is also said to be fire-resistant and can tolerate recycled water.

It has small, evergreen leaves and abundant white and yellow flowers that are very attractive to insects. Coyote Bush grows well in most soil types. It is a drought-adapted, low-water plant that requires minimal summer irrigation.

Horticultural selection from Baccharis pilularis from Pigeon Point on the central California Coast north of santa Cruz. Baccharis Pigeon Point' grows into a 1' by 6' wide bright green groundcover. This is the preferred form of Dwarf Coyote Brush for slope stabilization and landscaping in almost all areas. Plant from gallons three to five feet apart for a two year or so fill-in. If you plant close together they grow over each other and you end up with a higher groundcover. 'Pigeon Point' doesn't tend to get woody and seems to stay low and clean for at least ten to twelve years. Baccharis species are the nectary sources for most of the predatory wasps, native (small) butterflies and native flies. These plants 'sing' with life. They're great startups for bad sites, and the evergreen carpet is pleasant to the eye. Water about once every two weeks to wash the dust off of the foliage. Coyote Brush, like many native plants, hates dust.

Pozo surf Coyote Bush is also known as Lowly Coyote bush or Parking strip coyote bush due to its reputation as a virtually indestructible groundcover that will survive the abuses of narrow parking strips. Given its drought tolerance, ability to thrive in many soil types, including clay it should perhaps be called Tough-As-Nails Coyote Bush? This is the mounding, evergreen groundcover you need for those narrow spaces where nothing else will thrive. It may reach 2' high and spread 2-3'.

In California it is found in the southern half of the state. This is a shrub producing erect, branching stems approaching three meters in maximum height. The thick leaves are oblong to oval in shape and sometimes have roughly toothed edges. They may be up to 7 centimeters long. The shrub is dioecious, with male and female plants producing flower heads of different types. The head is enclosed in a layer of phyllaries and the female flowers yield fruits, each an achene with a white pappus about a centimeter long. The foliage and flower heads are hairy and sticky. This species is very similar to its relatives, Baccharis pilularis and Baccharis salicifolia. It's a good choice for a bioswale, edge of a pond, alkaline soil patches, or where rapid growth is desired and its tendency to spread can be accommodated.

Baccharis sarothroides is a species of flowering shrub known by the common names broom baccharis and desert broom. It grows up to 12 feet tall and up to 6 feet wide. The leaves are small and thick, and tends to stay bright green through the year in the foothills and areas with around 15" of rainfall per year. The plant goes summer deciduous and loses its leaves in the drier desert regions. It flowers abundantly in the summer, often completely covered with white or cream covered puffy flowers. This plant is native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States, growing in coastal sage scrub and inland scrub plant communities, usually in dry canyons and plains below 1000 feet. In California it is limited to the southern part of the state. It is a useful plant for a screen, slope stabilization or filling in large empty areas. The voluminous seeds may be considered a nuisance.

Baccharis sergiloides is a species of baccharis known by the common name desert baccharis. The plant is native to the Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico, where it grows in wet areas in dry desert and woodland habitat, such as streambeds. It is found in the Mojave Desert and Sonoran Deserts in the States of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Sonora, and Baja California. Baccharis sergiloides is a shrub producing many erect, branching stems approaching 2 m (6 ft) in maximum height. The leaves are mostly oval shape and up to about 3 centimetres (1. 2 in) long. Baccharis vanessae is a rare California species of baccharis known by the common name Encinitas baccharis. It is native primarily to San Diego County, California, almost endemic to the county except for one population a few miles over the county line in Riverside County. It is a member of the chaparral flora. It is a federally listed threatened species. It is present in several sites in Encinitas, and it is known from other parts of the county from the coastline to the mountains on various substrates. There are perhaps 15 populations remaining, for a total of about 2000 individuals. Some of the remaining occurrences are on land which may be cleared for development. Baccharis vanessae is a sticky, glandular shrub producing dense, branching, erect stems approaching 2 meters in maximum height. The leaves are linear and up to 4. 5 centimetres (1. 8 in) long. This dioecious shrub produces male and female flower heads on different individuals. The fruit is an achene with a pappus up to a centimeter long. Fire suppression in the fire-prone chaparral habitat threaten those plants occurring near residential areas. Introduced species of plants have altered the local plant community. Some of the populations are very small, made up of just a few individuals, reducing their genetic viability.

Bacopa eisenii is a species of water hyssop known by the common name Gila River water hyssop. It is native to California and Nevada, where it grows in wet habitat such as rice paddies and muddy river banks. This aquatic plant has rounded or oval leaves 1 to 3 centimeters long with several longitudinal veins. The flower appears on a stout pedicel; it is white with a bright golden throat. The fruit is a capsule containing many seeds.

Native to coastal Southern California, San Diego county viguiera (Bahiopsis laciniata) adds a bright splash of yellow to the waterwise landscape. This evergreen shrub is a member of the Aster family. It is sometimes called the San Diego sunflower or tornleaf goldeneye.

The sunflower-like blooms cover the plant from winter to summer. The small, toothed leaves are a vibrant, shiny green. San Diego county viguiera is a hardy, fast-growing shrub. It is easy to grow and does well in sandy, well-draining soil with minimal watering. 

San Diego county viguiera’s cheerful blooms attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds to the garden. The plant provides cover for wildlife. After blooming, the spent flowers can be deadheaded or left for birds. Prune in the fall after flowering.

This plant does well on dry slopes. Plant in clusters to form a hedge or combine with other colorful, low-water perennials for visual interest.

Viguiera parishii, also known as Parish goldeneye or shrubby goldeneye, is a flowering shrub in the family Asteraceae, native to the southwestern United States, including southern California, far southern Nevada, and much of Arizona, as well as adjacent parts of northwest Mexico (Baja California and Sonora). Parish goldeneye grows to two feet tall, with bright yellow flowers. It is a plant of desert areas, usually associated with creosote bush, and ranges from sea level to 5000' in elevation. It blooms after periods of rain, both in spring and in fall, or after the monsoon season in Arizona.

Bahiopsis reticulata is a species of flowering plant in the aster family known by the common names netvein goldeneye and Death Valley goldeneye. It is native to the Mojave Desert of California and Nevada, where it grows in several types of dry desert habitat. Many of the populations are inside Death Valley National Park. Bahiopsis reticulata is a tangled shrub with many slender stems covered in soft hairs and peeling bark. It easily exceeds one meter in height and width. The gray-green leaves are oppositely arranged on the lower stems and alternately on the upper. The leaf blades are generally oval with pointed tips and measure up to 9 centimeters long by 6. 5 wide. They are deeply veined, coated in woolly hairs, and glandular but not shiny. The inflorescence is a cyme of sunflower-like flower heads borne on a hairy, leafless peduncle. The flower head has several yellow ray florets measuring up to 1. 5 centimeters long. The fruit is an achene tipped with a pappus.

Baileya multiradiata is a species of sun-loving wildflower native to western North America, especially the US desert southwest and northern Mexico. It is an annual or perennial clumping patch of silvery-green foliage which bears many tall, naked stems, each topped with a bright yellow marigoldlike flower. The bloom loses its ray florets early, leaving behind a nodding stalk holding the disc florets where the seeds develop. In the garden give it fast drainage, not too much water and lots of surface rocks (no organic mulch or fertilizer). It is somewhat short-lived as a perennial but readily re-seeds itself if conditions are right.

Baileya pauciradiata is a North American species of flowering plant in the daisy family which is known by the common names laxflower and Colorado desert marigold. It is native to the deserts of northwestern Mexico and the Southwestern United States. It has been found in the States of California, Arizona, Nevada, Baja California, and Sonora. Baileya pauciradiata is an annual or perennial herb with a gray-green downy stem branching to heights between 10 and 50 centimeters. The leaves are linear or lance-shaped and measure 4 to 14 centimeters long. Those at the base of the plant wither while those along the stem generally remain as the plant flowers. The inflorescence is composed of 2 or 3 flower heads. Each has a few three-lobed yellow ray florets around a center of yellow disc florets. The fruit is a club-shaped achene about half a centimeter long. Food source. This plant is the main food source for the sand dune dwelling moth Schinia pallicincta.

Baileya pleniradiata is a species of flowering plant in the daisy family which is known by the common name woolly desert marigold. It is native to desert regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, where it grows in sandy habitat. This is an annual herb producing a light gray-green to nearly white woolly branching stem up to half a meter in height. The leaves are up to 8 centimeters long and may split into a few lobes. Each flower cluster is composed of a single flower head which is borne on a peduncle up to 10 centimeters long. The flower head has a center of yellow disc florets surrounded by a fringe of ray florets, sometimes in two or more layers, each bright yellow and up to a centimeter in length. The fruit is a sharply angled achene a few millimeters long.

Balsamorhiza deltoidea is a species of flowering plant in the sunflower tribe of the plant family Asteraceae known by the common name deltoid balsamroot. It is native to western North America from British Columbia to California, where it grows in many types of generally mountainous habitat. This is a taprooted perennial herb growing erect to a maximum height near 90 centimeters. The stems are hairy and hairy. The large leaves are up to 25 centimeters long and 20 wide, and are roughly triangular in shape, hairy and hairy, and often toothed along the edges. The flower cluster bears usually one or sometimes a few large flower heads, each lined with hairy, pointed phyllaries up to 4 centimeters long. Hooker's Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza hookeri) is a native perennial herb that grows in central and northern California. It is moderately fast growing and moderately long-lived. It grows in a semi-upright form to a height of 1 foot, with active growth during the spring. Flowers are yellow and striking, and bloom in the mid spring. Leaves are medium green and deciduous. It tends to grow in open woods and grassy slopes, at elevations from 2500-5000 feet.

Balsamorhiza lanata (lanate balsamroot) is a North American species of plants in the sunflower tribe within the aster family. It is native to mountainous regions in northern California and southern Oregon. Balsamorhiza lanata is an herb up to 30 cm (12 inches) tall. Leaves are covered with dense hairs resembling wool, so they look white. It has yellow flower heads, usually borne one at a time, with both ray florets and disc florets. The species grows on grassy areas on hillsides and road embankments

Balsamorhiza macrolepis is a species of flowering plant in the sunflower tribe of the aster family, known by the common name California balsamroot. It is found only in California, where it grows in dry, open habitat, mostly in mountainous areas, mostly in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada and in the eastern Coast Ranges near San Francisco Bay. It is now becoming rare in the Coast Ranges. Balsamorhiza macrolepis is a taprooted perennial herb growing erect 20 to 60 centimeters tall.
