The flower cluster is a green spike up to 6.5 centimeters long made up of awned spikelets between 1 and 2 centimeters long.

It is known for its ability to tolerate saline soils but is capable of productive growth on soil types ranging from loamy to clayey soils with pH's of 6.4 to 9.5. The upper limit of soil NaCl for productive growth and development is 1.0%. Foxtail barley is also adapted to a wide range of moisture regimes from dry to wet. Although this species is generally found on moist sites, it can withstand drought-like conditions. It is commonly found in lowland areas with restricted soil drainage, disturbed sites, waste areas and fields. Foxtail barley is a pioneer species or invader in disturbed areas and in areas with high salinity. It is among the first grasses to establish after disturbance and rapidly invades areas exposed by a receding water table.

It is known from four populations in southern Oregon, including Mount Ashland, and one population south of the border in Siskiyou County, California. It is a resident of dry forest habitat in the granite soils of the Klamath Mountains. This is a perennial herb producing a low mat of hairy, hairy gray-green foliage about a woody base. The leaves are cylindrical and sometimes tapering to a point, growing erect in a patch around the caudex. Each leaf is 3 to 8 centimeters long and is made up of densely spaced pairs of minutely toothed leaflets. The leaflets are coated in silky hairs. The flower cluster is a dense array flowers atop an erect stalk, each flower made up of five hairy, pointed sepals and five smaller, more delicate white petals. Although few populations of the plant are known to exist, they are not in imminent danger of destruction and a federal listing as an endangered or threatened species was declined in 2003. The Mount Ashland populations of this plant are sometimes threatened by recreational activities at that site, including skiing and maintenance of ski facilities, and off-road vehicle use.

It is endemic to the Transverse Ranges of southern California, where it grows in several types of habitat, including pine forest. This is a perennial herb producing a low mat of hairy, hairy gray-green foliage around a woody base. The leaves are mostly flat and made up of pairs of hairy, wedge-shaped leaflets with toothed tips. The flower cluster is an open array of up to 40 flowers atop an erect stalk, each flower made up of five pointed green sepals and five white petals. At the center of the flower is a cone of 10 stamens around a bunch of up to 50 pistils.

Horkelia truncata is a species of flowering plant in the rose family known by the common name Ramona horkelia. It is native to the Peninsular Ranges of southern California and northern Baja California, where it grows in the chaparral. This is a clumpy perennial herb forming tufts of erect leaves and stems. The leaves are up to 13 centimeters long and are made up of large oval-shaped leaflets with toothed edges and squared-off, toothed tips. The terminal leaflet of the leaf is sometimes untoothed. The thin stem is 20 to 60 centimeters tall and holds an flower cluster of several flowers. Each flower has short sepals beneath five round white petals. The center of the flower contains a ring of stamens around a patch of up to 80 thready pistils.

Lotus crassifolius is a species of trefoil, a legume, known by the common names big deervetch and broad-leafed lotus. It is a long-lived, somewhat bushy plant which bears long straight stems with evenly spaced oval-shaped leaves. It produces thick bunches of yellow or pink-and-yellow pea flowers and brownish pea pods containing speckled red or brown peas. This legume is native to the western United States. One very rare variety of this plant is found only on Otay Mountain in southern San Diego County, California. Other varieties are much more common and can be found in chaparral ecosystems.

Big Deervetch (Lotus crassifolius var. crassifolius) is a native perennial herb that grows in northern, southern and central California. It tends to grow at elevations from 1000-6900 feet.

Otay Mtn. Lotus is a rare native perennial herb in the Fabaceae (Legume) family. It is one of two recognized varieties of Hosackia crassifolia found in California. It is found primarily in the Otay Mountain area of San Diego County and adjacent Baja, although there is also a disjunct population reported in San Luis Obispo County. The more common var. crassifolia also occurs in the same area of San Diego. Otay Mountain Lotus tends to grow in chaparral or disturbed areas at elevations from 1,000 to 4,000 feet. This plant is rarely used in gardens, a little information is available on its cultural tolerances and requirements.

Hosackia gracilis is a species in the Fabaceae (Legume) family known by the common name Seaside Bird's-foot Trefoil. It is a rare plant native to western North America from British Columbia to California, as far south as San Luis Obispo County, where it grows in moist spots in the coastal mountains and down to the oceanside bluffs. Due to its limited distribution it is included on CNPS list 4.2. It is a perennial herb growing upright or spreading to about half a meter in maximum length. It is lined with leaves each made up of a few oppositely arranged oval leaflets up to 2 centimeters long. The flower cluster is made up of several pea-like flowers each 1 to 2 centimeters long. The flower has a bright yellow banner, or upper petal, and bright pink or white lower petals. The fruit is a legume pod 2 or 3 centimeters long.

Lotus oblongifolius is a species of legume known by the common name streambank bird's-foot trefoil. It is native to western North America from Oregon to northern Mexico, where it grows in moist to wet areas in several types of habitat. It is a spreading or upright perennial herb lined with leaves each made up of elongated oval leaflets each up to 2.5 centimeters long. The flower cluster bears several yellow and white flowers between 1 and 2 centimeters long. The fruit is very elongated, reaching up to 5 centimeters in length but just a few millimeters in width.
