Arctostaphylos insularis is a species of manzanita known by the common name island manzanita. It is endemic to Santa Cruz Island, one of the Channel Islands of California. It grows in chaparral and woodland. This is a large, spreading shrub ordinarily reaching over two meters tall and known to exceed five meters in height. It has waxy, reddish bark and the smaller twigs sometimes have bristly hairy hairs. The leaves are shiny green and smooth, generally oval in shape and slightly convex, and up to about 4.5 centimeters long. The shrub blooms in many dense clustered flower clusters of urn-shaped flowers. The fruit is an orange-brown drupe up to 1.5 centimeters wide. Its long bloom time makes it a good choice for the coastal southern California garden where it will get some moisture from fog drip.

Dr. Hurd manzanita (Arctostaphylos manzanita 'Dr. Hurd') is known for its beautiful dark reddish-brown bark that forms an attractive contrast with its glossy, light green foliage. It is a relatively fast growing shrub that can be pruned in late summer to achieve the desired height or spread and may become a small tree. The white flowers bloom in February to April followed by clusters of berries in fall, making it a great year-round pollinator plant. Presidio Manzanita (Arctostaphylos hookeri ssp. ravenii) is a rare native shrub whose only documented location in the wild is in Presidio Park, San Francisco. It is listed by State and federal agencies as an Endangered Species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says that only one individual of this subspecies remains in the wild and no wild seedlings of this plant have been observed. However, it has been propagated from seeds and cuttings for conservation purposes, and it is sometimes available for garden use. It was formerly classified as Arctostaphylos hookeri ssp. revenii and some sources may still refer to it by that name.

Arctostaphylos montaraensis is a species of manzanita known by the common name Montara manzanita. It is endemic to San Mateo County, California, where it is known from a few occurrences on San Bruno and Montara Mountains. It is also cultivated as a chaparral landscaping plant. This is an erect shrub reaching maximum heights near 5 meters. The stems are deep red in color and the twigs are coated in hairy bristles. It has a dense foliage of light green hairy leaves, rough and dull in texture and up to 4 or 5 centimeters long. The flower cluster is a dense cluster of cone-shaped manzanita flowers, each just under a centimeter long and with bristles inside.

Arctostaphylos montereyensis is a species of manzanita known by the common names Monterey manzanita and Toro manzanita. It is endemic to Monterey County, California, where it is known from only a few occurrences around Fort Ord and Toro County Park near Salinas. It is a plant of maritime chaparral on sandy soils. This is a shrub reaching a maximum height between one and two meters, with bristly, hairy twigs. The dark green leaves are rough, bristly, and smooth-edged, sometimes with a waxy texture. They are 2 to 3 centimeters long and round to oval in shape. The flower cluster is a dense cluster of urn-shaped flowers, and the fruit is a bristly, hairy drupe about a centimeter wide.

Arctostaphylos morroensis is a species endemic to California, where it is native to a very limited area of San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County, from the vicinity of Morro Bay to Santa Maria. It is a spreading shrub, reaching up to 4 meters in height but usually less, and generally staying wider than tall. It has shreddy red-gray bark and whiskery bristles on the smaller branches and twigs. The leaves are oval-shaped and slightly convex, dark green on the upper surface and duller gray-green beneath. Plentiful flowers hang in dense clusters on short pedicels during the winter months. They are usually very light pink, urn-shaped, and hairy inside. The fruits are fuzzy red drupes each about a centimeter wide. This is a plant of the sandy coastal cliffs and beach chaparral. It is also cultivated as an ornamental.

Arctostaphylos myrtifolia is a species in the Ericaceae (Heath) family known by the common name Ione Manzanita. It is a rare species, endemic to the Sierra Nevada foothills of California where it grows in the chaparral and woodland on a distinctive acidic soil series in western Amador and Calaveras Counties. This is a red-barked, bristly shrub reaching just over a meter in maximum height. The small bright green leaves are coated in tiny hairy hairs and are shiny but rough in texture. They are less than 2 centimeters long. The flower cluster is a raceme of urn-shaped manzanita flowers on bright red branches. The fruit is a cylindrical drupe only a few millimeters long. A major threat to this rare endemic plant is a pair of fungal diseases. A branch canker caused by species of Fusicoccum, including F. aesculi, causes some mortality, and root and crown rot caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi has destroyed entire stands of the manzanita and prevented its regrowth in patches of infested soil.

Arctostaphylos nummularia is a species of manzanita known by the common name glossyleaf manzanita. It is endemic to California, where it grows in the forests of the coastal and inland ranges north of the San Francisco Bay. This is a red-barked shrub reaching a maximum height up to five meters. The smaller twigs are covered lightly in white hairy bristles. The leaves are oval-shaped to nearly round, one to two centimeters long and wide. The edges are very finely toothed to nearly smooth, lined with tiny bristles, and sometimes curled under. The upper surface of the leaf is darker green and shinier than the underside. The flower cluster holds a cluster of hanging flowers, which are spherical and white to pink-tinged. The fruit is a cylindrical drupe less than half a centimeter long containing a few seeds.

There are two subspecies; ssp. mendocinoensis (Pygmy Manzanita) was formerly considered a separate species. It is now considered a subspecies of nummularia but rare due to its extremely restricted range, a tiny population on the coast between Ft. Bragg and Albion. As a garden plant it may be difficult unless you can replicate conditions from its native area.

Arctostaphylos obispoensis is a rare species in the Ericaceae (Heath) family known by the common names Serpentine Manzanita and Bishop Manzanita. It is endemic to California, where it is known only from the southern Santa Lucia Mountains of Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties. For this reason it is included in CNPS list 4.3. It grows in the woodlands and forests of the coastal range, usually on serpentine soil. This is a shrub growing to a height of at least a meter, but known to sprawl to over four meters in height. The small branches and newer leaves are woolly. The mature leaves are hairless and oblong to widely lance-shaped and up to 4.5 centimeters long. The flower cluster is a dense cluster of urn-shaped manzanita flowers. The fruit is a waxy drupe at least a centimeter wide. Despite its rarity, it is a fairly easy plant to grow and good for the central coast.

Otay Manzanita (Arctostaphylos otayensis) is a beautiful rare native shrub that grows in San Diego county in the the Otay Mountains of San Diego County, possibly extending into northern Baja. It is rare in the northern part of the Peninsular Range. Leaves are striking - light pink when new, and gray- green when mature. Flowers are white and bloom early and long. It tends to grow in stony slopes and volcanic rock outcrops, at elevations from 1000-4000 feet.

Pacific Manzanita (Arctostaphylos pacifica) is a very rare native shrub that is known from only a single location in the San Bruno Mountains. It has also been subject to some taxonomic uncertainty. It was previously considered a hybrid but is now considered a distinct species. Despite its rarity in the wild, it has been available in the horticultural trade for a number of years. It is a ground-cover manzanita that is attractive and garden tolerant. In its native location it enjoys a climate that is very moderate, with 20-40 inches of winter rainfall annually and mild, foggy summers. It is best used along the central coast.

Arctostaphylos pajaroensis is a species of manzanita known by the common name Pajaro manzanita. It is endemic to California, where it is known mainly from Monterey County. Historical occurrences have been noted in Santa Cruz and far western San Benito Counties; these may no longer exist. Most of the extant populations are located in the hills south of the Pajaro River Valley. It is a member of the chaparral plant community. This is an erect shrub growing at least a meter tall and known to exceed four meters in height. It has shreddy red or grayish bark with woolly hairs and long white bristles on its smaller twigs. The dense foliage is made up of gray-green, reddish-tinted leaves with smooth, toothed, or rolled edges. They are oval to somewhat triangular in shape and 2 to 4 centimeters long. The shrub flowers in the winter, bearing large loose flower clusters of pink to nearly white urn-shaped flowers. The fruit is a drupe about 7 millimeters wide.

In the garden its combination of reddish new growth and pink flowers is striking. It can be pruned to ground cover height or allowed to mound up. Though native to the coast, it has performed well in inland gardens with well drained soil in sun to part shade. It has an unusually long bloom time for a manzanita. The horticultural variety 'Paradise' is most often available in nurseries.

The bark is a dark red, while the flowers vary from white to pink depending on the climate and soil. If the manzanita is pruned once a year the bright red new growth will cover the shrub and the growth will turn almost purple in the fall. One of the most spectacular things about this manzanita is the fact that is flowers for almost 3 months.

Arctostaphylos pallida, commonly known as Pallid Manzanita, Oakland Hills Manzanita, and Alameda Manzanita, is an upright shrub from the Ericaceae, or heath, family. It grows to around 6 to 13 feet. high. The branches on the shrub are reddish or grayish (more reddish) and they have twigs that tend to be bristly. The ovate to triangular leaves are bristly, strongly overlapping and clasping. They are 1.0 to 1.8 inch long and 0.8 to 1.2 inch wide. The dense, white flowers are urn-shaped and 0.2 to 0.3 inch long. The flowering period is from November to March. A. pallida commonly co-occurs with another manzanita species, Brittle Leaf Manzanita (Arctostaphylos tomentosa ssp. crustacea), but the latter is a burl-forming species with spreading leaves. A. pallida does not form burls.

Arctostaphylos parryana is a species in the Ericaceae (Heath) family known by the common name Parry manzanita. This shrub is endemic to California, where it grows in the western section of the Transverse Ranges, from coastal Santa Barbara County to the San Gabriel Mountains, western Riverside County and San Diego County. This is an erect manzanita, standing on red-barked stems and reaching up to two meters in height. The leaves are bright green, generally oval in shape and pointed. The small pink-tinted white flowers are borne in densely-bunched flower clusters, but it does not produce as many flowers as some other species of Manzanita. The fruit is a rounded drupe which contains two or more seeds which have fused into one body. It does not produce a basal burl and so may be killed by fire. This is a manzanita of mid-elevation chaparral and coniferous forest ecosystems, between 3,000 and 7,500 ft. The fruit was a food of the Luiseno native people of Southern California. There are four recognized subspecies, of which ssp. tumescens is a considered rare.

Arctostaphylos patula is a species in the Ericaceae (Heath) family known by the common name Greenleaf Manzanita. This is a shrub of the Sierras and Klamath mountains, living at higher elevations and tolerating very cold winters. It reaches between one and two meters in height. Like other Manzanitas its lower branches extend more outward than upward and may root in the soil where they touch. The stems are twisting and reddish-brown in color, and shiny due to hairy secretion. The leaves are oval-shaped to nearly round, and flat, shiny, and smooth. They are 6 centimeters long and four wide at maximum. The plentiful flowers are white to pink and urn-shaped, each with five small lobes at the mouth of the corolla, hanging in bunches. The fruits are dark brown drupes nearly a centimeter wide, each containing about five hard-coated seeds. Seeds require fire followed by cold conditions to germinate; seeds can remain dormant in soil for hundreds of years. In a few areas Greenleaf Manzanitas produce lignotubers from which they can reproduce vegetatively. In the garden this plant seems to tolerate many conditions. However, it is not tolerant of alkaline soil. 

La Panza Manzanita (Arctostaphylos pilosula) is a rare native shrub in the Ericaceae (Heath) family that grows in the Central Coast region, primarily in San Luis Obispo County. It tends to grow in sandstone outcrops, at elevations from sea level to 1,300 feet. As with other species from this region, La Panza Manzanita is exposed to a very mild climate with some summer moisture provided by fog drip.

Mexican Manzanita is a uncommon native shrub in the Ericaceae (Heath) family that grows in Southern California, primarily in the Peninsular Range region. It tends to grow as part of the chaparral community on rocky slopes, at elevations from 3900-7900 feet. It has gray green leaves with typical urn-shaped pink or white flowers. It is great for a bird garden. There is one recognized subspecies, ssp. drupacea, which is known as Pink-bracted Manzanita or Idyllwild Manzanita.

Pinkbracted Manzanita (Arctostaphylos pringlei ssp. drupacea) is a uncommon native shrub that grows in Southern and Central California, primarily in the Transverse Range and Peninsular Range regions. It tends to grow in rocky slopes, at elevations from 3900-7900 feet.

Arctostaphylos pumila is a species of manzanita known by the common name Sandmat Manzanita. This shrub is endemic to California where it grows on the coastline near Monterey. This is a petite, low-lying manzanita which forms flat bushes and patchy, creeping mats in sandy soil. The branch tips will take root as it spreads. The bark is reddish and tends not to shred. The leaves are small and mainly oval-shaped, dark green on the upper surface and grayish and fuzzy beneath. The flowers appear in sparse flower clusters and are white to very pale pink. The fruit is a round brownish drupe about half a centimeter wide. In the wild this plant derives a lot of moisture from fog but does not like salt spray directly on it.

Arctostaphylos pungens is a species of manzanita known by the common name pointleaf manzanita. It is native to the southwestern United States and northern to central Mexico, where it grows in chaparral and woodland, and on desert ridges. This is an erect, spreading shrub growing to heights between one and three meters. It has smooth red bark. Its smaller twigs and new leaves are lightly woolly. Mature leaves are leathery, shiny and green, oval to widely lance-shaped, and up to 4 centimeters long. The flower cluster is a spherical cluster of urn-shaped manzanita flowers. The fruit is a drupe 5 to 8 millimeters wide. It is a food source for many kinds of wildlife, and it is harvested by people and made into jam in many parts of Mexico. This shrub thrives in dry, shallow, acidic soils heavy with gravel and sand, and forms relationships with mycorrhizae to obtain extra nutrients and water. The seeds require scarification by wildfire before they can germinate.

Arctostaphylos purissima is a rare species in the Ericaceae (Heath) family known by the common names La Purisima Manzanita or Lompoc Manzanita. It is endemic to a very small portion of western Santa Barbara County, California, near the City of Lompoc, site of Mission La Pursima Concepcion. It is a plant of the coastal chaparral on sandstone soils. This is a shrub reaching at least a meter in height and known to exceed four meters tall. It varies in shape from low and spreading to tall and erect. It is coated in long, white bristles and a dense foliage of shiny, hairless green leaves. Each leaf is round to oval in shape and smooth along the edges, and up to 2.5 centimeters long. The inflorescence is a hanging cluster of spherical to urn-shaped flowers each about half a centimeter long. It has a notably long flowering season. The fruit is a hairless drupe between one half and one centimeter wide. This is one of several Manzanita species that are unique to the central coast and it would make a nice addition to any coastal garden. Horticultural varieties known as 'Vandenberg' and 'Petite Margarita' are available that offer an especially compact shape.

Arctostaphylos rainbowensis is a rare species in the Ericaceae (Heath) family known by the common name Rainbow manzanita. It is endemic to California, where it is known only from northern San Diego and southern Riverside Counties. A specimen was first collected in 1973 and considered to be part of a disjunct population of Arctostaphylos peninsularis, or alternately a hybrid between A. glauca and Arctostaphylos glandulosa. Following phenetic analyses both possibilities were discarded and the plant was described as a new species in 1994. It was named for the community of Rainbow, California, near where it is most common in the chaparral of the lower elevation coastal mountains and the only manzanita species throughout most of its range.

This is an erect shrub reaching a bushlike one meter to a treelike four meters in height. It produces a burl at its base and is coated in reddish brown, smooth bark. The oval leaves are up to 5 centimeters long and 3.5 wide and are hairless and somewhat waxy in texture. The flower cluster is a hanging cluster of white urn-shaped flowers each about 6 to 8 millimeters long. The fruit is about a centimeter wide and ripens to a dark purple-brown.

Arctostaphylos refugioensis is a species in the Heath family (Ericaceae) known by the common name Refugio manzanita. It is endemic to Santa Barbara County, California, where it can be found along the immediate coastline, including the vicinity of Refugio State Beach, and into the Santa Ynez Mountains. It is a plant of the coastal chaparral on sandstone soils. This is a shrub reaching at least two meters tall and known to exceed four meters in maximum height. Its branches are covered in long, gland-tipped bristles and a dense foliage of oblong greenish to deep red leaves. Each leaf is dull, waxy, and often bristly in texture, smooth or toothed along the edges, and up to 4.5 centimeters long. The shrub flowers in winter in clusters of cone-shaped or urn-shaped flowers each up to a centimeter long. The fruit is a spherical to oval red drupe with a pointed end, measuring at least a centimeter long. Despite being from a mild climate area, it seems to do well in cultivation in hotter and colder inland areas.

Arctostaphylos regismontana is a species of manzanita known by the common name Kings Mountain manzanita. It is endemic to California, where it is known from the northern slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains in the southern San Francisco Bay Area. It can be found in chaparral and broadleaf and coniferous forest on granite and sandstone soils. This is an erect shrub reaching over two meters in height and known to exceed four meters. It is bristly and hairy, exuding sticky resins. It has a dense foliage of curved oval-shaped leaves which are greenish in color and fuzzy and sticky in texture. They are smooth or toothed along the edges and up to 6 centimeters long. The flower cluster is an open cluster of conical manzanita flowers each one half to one centimeter long. The fruit is a hairy, sticky drupe.

Arctostaphylos rudis is a rare species in the Ericaceae (Heath) family known by the common names Sand Mesa Manzanita and Shagbark Manzanita. It is endemic to California, where it is known only from the southern Central Coast. It is most abundant at Burton Mesa in the hills north of Lompoc, and there are a few occurrences remaining near Nipomo. It grows in chaparral and coastal sage scrub on sandy soils. This is an erect shrub growing from a burl to heights between one and two meters. Its stem and branches are covered in shredding gray and reddish bark, with its smaller branches coated in woolly fibers. The leaves are oval in shape and smooth along the edges with few hairs, green in color and shiny. They are 1 to 3 centimeters long. It flowers in late fall and winter with pink urn-shaped manzanita flowers. The fruits are hairless red drupes about a centimeter wide or slightly larger. Despite its rarity in the wild, it is easy to grow and accepting of garden conditions. It is probably best used near the coast.

It is endemic to Santa Cruz County, California, where it is known from only about 20 occurrences in the southern Santa Cruz Mountains. It grows in coniferous forest and chaparral on the sandy coastal slopes. This is a large shrub growing at least a meter tall and known to exceed six meters, looking much like a tree. The bark is dark red and smooth. The leaves are greenish-gray in color and sometimes slightly woolly. They are oval in shape and up to 3.5 centimeters long. The flower clusters consist of long, urn-shaped flowers and the fruit is a drupe 6 to 12 millimeters wide.

In the garden its gray foliage contrasts nicely with the red bark. It tolerates cold but prefers no summer water. It would probably perform best in northern to central California gardens close to the coast.

Arctostaphylos tomentosa is a species of manzanita known by the common name woollyleaf manzanita or woolley manzanita. This shrub is endemic to California. It is a resident of chaparral canyons, foothills, and lower-elevation mountains. One specialized habitat in which Arctostaphylos tomentos is found is the Monterey Cypress forests at Point Lobos and Del Monte Forest in Monterey County, California. This is a low-lying, spreading manzanita, generally quite a bit wider than it is tall. It is a variable species and even some of the subspecies can vary in appearance across individuals. The stems may be red or gray or both, with smooth, rough, or shreddy bark, hairless to quite bristly. The leaves may be oval to lance-shaped and sometimes toothed, but the upper surface is generally darker and shinier than the lower. The flowers are white to pink and may be hairy or hairless inside. The fruits are fuzzy reddish drupes under a centimeter in diameter. Subspecies. Kinnikinnick is a popular low-growing manzanita that is often used as a groundcover and lawn replacement plant. It is a spreading evergreen shrub that features small, pinkish-white flowers and red berries. Both the flowers and fruit are attractive to birds and insects.

Kinnikinnick and its cultivars grow best in cooler mountainous or coastal regions of California. When planted in hot, dry inland areas, it requires afternoon shade and supplemental water. Kinnikinnick likes loamy, acidic soil.

One of the faster growing manzanitas, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi 'Green supreme' is truly superior when it comes to dense, low, evergreen ground cover. 'Green supreme' has noticeably brighter green leaves than most manzanita, a brilliant contrast with the plant's ruddy branches and stems. With very little to no die back in the center, Green supreme's exceptionally dense foliage helps suppress weeds. This manzanita grows just 6 inches tall but can spread up to 12 feet. It does well on slopes, thriving in well-drained soil but also grows well in heavier clay soil that has reasonable drainage. 'Green supreme' enjoys full sun and is drought tolerant, but occasional watering every 4-6 weeks will keep this manzanita looking extra dapper. Green supreme is frost hardy to 15 to 20 °F. It is more reluctant to bloom than other manzanita varieties, but a scattering of white to pale pink flowers will appear in late spring to early summer. Horticultural selection from Arctostaphylos uva-ursi from Point Reyes just north of san Francisco. 'Point Reyes' is one of the most common manzanitas in cultivaton. It has deep green shiny leaves. it makes a great groundcover and slope stabilizer. It uusally stays under 1 foot tallbut will spread to about 10-12 feet. It has proven to be very garden tolerant and has done well here in the interior heat with some regular summer water. Give this manzanita a well-draining soil for best performance, but you will find it is not fussy about what type of soil; rocky or sandy, acid soils to richer heavier soils, Point Reyes seems to grow in all these conditions.

Radiant manzanita is found in the northern parts of the US, growing amidst the conifers and oaks on the west coast from northern California up to Alaska. It makes an excellent matting ground cover, growing only up to 8 inches high and spreading up to 6 feet. Radiant manzanita can spill over a wall, down a slope, or replace a lawn. It has small pink flowers in early winter followed by bright red berries that make a great wildlife offering for native birds. Full sun along the coast, but some shade inland in hot areas would be appreciated by this fresh looking, evergreen groundcover. Requires more water inland, but grows faster when provided that extra moisture. Radiant manzanita will grow in most soils including clay and sand as long as there is good drainage and some moisture, adapting to traditional garden conditions quite well.
