This dudleya is endemic to southern California, where it is known from only about 20 occurrences in San Diego, Orange, and Riverside Counties. It is mainly found on coastal bluffs and inland chaparral rocky slopes. The Dudleya viscida plant has a basal clump of erect fleshy, pointed leaves which are nearly cylindrical or most often elliptical in cross section. They are pale green to yellow-green or red in color and covered in a sticky, oily exudate which has a faintly resinous scent. It grows erect stems with many-branched inflorescences, with each branch bearing up to 10 flowers. Each flower is pink to nearly white with red veining or streaks and protruding stamens between the pointed petals.

Everett's Choice California fuchsia (Epilobium canum var. latifolium 'Everett's Choice') is a deciduous perennial in the Evening-Primrose family (Onagraceae). Everett Butts from Wapumne Nursery (Lincoln, California) introduced this horticultural selection, and it is one of the lowest growing of all California fuchsias. Small silvery leaves hug the ground, with red-orange tubular flowers floating above. Hummingbirds adore the flowers and rely on them as a food source in late summer and early autumn, when little else is blooming.

California fuchsias grow on dry slopes and ridges in Chaparral, Coastal Sage Scrub, and Pine or Fir Forest plant communities. Along the coast, it grows in extremely dry soil with no summer rain, but can also be found growing near creeks and streams. Inland, it survives drought, but looks fresher when growing near naturally moist sites. Everett's choice grows best in full sun along the coast with some afternoon shade in hot inland gardens. Although drought tolerant, it performs best with a deep summer watering every couple of weeks after establishment. These horsetails may have sterile or fertile stems. Sterile stems start to grow after the fertile stems have wilted. The sterile stems tend to be much taller and bushier, with the jointed segments being around one inch long with a diameter of about 1/20th of an inch. These segments contain one set of whorled, slender, erect branches each. Some stems can have as many as 20 segments and be as tall as 2-24 inches. The fertile stems tend to be half as tall as the sterile stems and also tend to be more succulent. This plant also has a very high diploid number - 216 (108 pairs of chromosomes) - which is roughly 5 times greater than the human diploid number (46).

Equisetum hyemale (Rough Horsetail or Scouring Rush) is a widespread species ative to moist forests, forest edges and stream banks, swamps, fens throughout most of California. It is primarily found in wetlands, and in riparian zones of rivers and streams where it can withstand seasonal flooding. It is also found around springs and seeps, and can indicate their presence when not flowing. Other habitats include moist forest and woodland openings, lake and pond shores, ditches, and marshes and swamps. It has jointed reed-like stalks impregnated with silica which makes them feel rough to the touch. The rough bristles have been used to scour or clean pots, used as sandpaper, as well as to shape the reeds of reed instruments such as clarinets or saxophones. Boiled and dried Equisetum hyemale is used as traditional polishing material like fine grit sandpaper in Japan. Best used in a container. If planted in the ground it can be an aggressive spreader. It is popular on the margin of ponds and bioswales.

Equisetum telmateia (great horsetail or northern giant horsetail) is a species of Equisetum (horsetail) with an unusual distribution, with one subspecies native to Europe, western Asia and northwest Africa, and a second subspecies native to western North America. The North American subspecies is often simply but ambiguously called "giant horsetail", but that name may just as well refer to the Latin American Equisetum giganteum and Equisetum myriochaetum. It is a herbaceous perennial plant, with separate green photosynthetic sterile stems, and pale yellowish non-photosynthetic spore-bearing fertile stems. The sterile stems, produced in late spring and dying down in late autumn, are 30-150 centimeter (rarely to 240 centimeter) tall (the tallest species of horsetail outside of tropical regions) and 1 centimeter diameter, heavily branched, with whorls of 14-40 branches, these up to 20 centimeter long, 1-2 millimeter diameter and unbranched, emerging from the axils of a ring of leafs. The fertile stems are produced in early spring before the sterile shoots, growing to 15-45 centimeter tall with an apical spore-bearing strobilus 4-10 centimeter long and 1-2 centimeter broad, and no side branches; the spores disperse in mid spring, with the fertile stems dying immediately after spore release. Ericameria greenei is a species of flowering shrub in the daisy family known by the common name Greene's goldenbush. It is native to the western United States from Washington and Oregon to California, where it grows in rocky and open wooded habitat. It is a small shrub growing up to about 25 centimeters tall with branches lined with short, narrow, hairless to hairy, woolly leaves. The flower cluster is a cluster of flower heads at the tips of stem branches. Each head is lined with sticky, hairy phyllaries and contains several yellowish disc florets and a few yellow ray florets. The fruit is an achene topped with a brownish pappus.

Ericameria laricifolia is a species of flowering shrub in the daisy family known by the common name turpentine bush, or turpentine-brush. This plant is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, where it grows in desert scrub and woodland. This shrub reaches one half to one meter in height, is generally hairless, somewhat hairy, and aromatic. It sometimes has naked stems at the base but the upper branches are densely foliated in needlelike, pointed leaves one to three centimeters long. The many erect branches bear flower clusters of bright golden yellow flower heads, each with many long disc florets and a few ray florets.

Grows best in sandy, coarse-grained or other fast draining soil. Prefers sun in coastal sites, and part shade in inland sites. Selected for the garden.

Ericameria linearifolia is a flowering plant in the daisy family known by the common names narrowleaf goldenbush and interior goldenbush. This is a standard bushy aster shrub which bears radiant yellow daisy flowers on long stems. It is native to the drier areas of California from the Central Valley south and Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.

Palmer's Goldenbush (Ericameria palmeri) is a native shrub that grows in Southern and Central California, primarily in the South Coast, the Channel Islands and Sonoran Desert regions. It was formerly classified in the genus Haplopappus, and some sources may still refer to it by that name. There are two recognized varieties, var. palmeri and var. pachylepis  It tends to grow in flats and slopes, at elevations from 0-2600 feet. While not the most attractive plant, it has wildlife value and is probably best suited for restoration projects or wildlife gardens. Its very late bloom time when little else is in flower makes it important for pollinators.

Mojave Rabbitbrush (Ericameria paniculata) is a native perennial herb that grows in southern and central California. It tends to grow at elevations from 1300-5200 feet.Ericameria paniculata (syn. Chrysothamnus paniculatus) is a species of flowering plant in the aster family known by the common names desert rabbitbrush, Mojave rabbitbrush, catclaw rabbitbrush, black-banded rabbitbrush, sticky rabbitbrush, and punctate rabbitbrush. It is native to the deserts of the southwestern United States.This plant is a branching shrub reaching up to 2 meters tall. The spreading or erect stems are glandular and resinous and are often banded or splotched with black from a fungus. The glandular leaves are up to 3 or 3.5 centimeters in length. The inflorescence is an array of flower heads, each of which contains 5 to 8 disc florets and no ray florets. The fruit is up to a centimeter long including its long pappus. They are wind-dispersed.This plant is found in a great variety of habitats, including disturbed areas such as roadsides. It tolerates poor soils. It may be found alongside creosote, Joshua tree, baccharis, white burrobush, desert saltbush, and catclaw acacia.

Eriogonum arborescens is a species of wild buckwheat known by the common name Santa Cruz Island buckwheat. This shrub is endemic to the Channel Islands of California.

The stems bear narrow, fuzzy green leaves at the ends of the branches. The bush erects clusters of densely clustered, frilly flowers. Each flower is tiny, very light pink in color, with nine protruding stamens. The flowers turn brown as they age. The bark is red and ribbony.

This is an uncommon plant in its native range on a few of the Channel Islands. It has also been planted as highway landscaping and in gardens on mainland California, where the shrub is not native.

Santa Cruz Island Buckwheat is easy to grow. Plant on dry, well drained shallow slopes or flats, and surround with plenty of mulch or rocks. It's extremely drought tolerant, and after the first two years should need no supplemental summer water. Even when drought-stressed in the summer, the plant looks beautiful, turning a beautiful silvery green color as the soil dries out.

Eriogonum cinereum is a species of wild buckwheat known by the common names coastal buckwheat and ashyleaf buckwheat. This shrub is endemic to the coastline of California, where it grows on beaches and bluffs and in coastal scrub and chaparral. This plant may reach up over a meter in height and width and is light silvery gray in color due to the woolly hairs on its stems and foliage. The leaves are wavy-edged ovals one to three centimeters long. The flower clusters stick out from the plant, each with one to several heads of tiny tightly-packed frilly flowers which are usually light brownish-pink in color and quite hairy. This is the foodplant for Euphilotes bernardino, the Bernardino dotted blue butterfly.
