Ericameria arborescens is a species of flowering shrub in the daisy family known by the common name goldenfleece. This plant is native to California and Oregon where it is a resident of chaparral communities and open woodlands. This is a resinous, hairy shrub exceeding two meters in maximum height. It has many erect branches covered in very thin, needlelike to lance-shaped leaves between 3 and 6 centimeters long. Atop each stem is an flower cluster of many bright golden flowers, each a rounded bunch of disc florets about half a centimeter wide. This plant is adapted to ecosystems prone to wildfire.

Ericameria ericoides is a species of flowering shrub in the daisy family known by the common names California goldenbush and California heathgoldenrod. This plant is endemic to California, where it grows in the sand dunes and coastal hills between the northern San Francisco Bay Area and the Los Angeles area. This shrub rarely approaches a maximum height of one meter and is densely foliated with comblike fans of small cylindrical leaves up to a centimeter long. Its small erect branches are topped with flower clusters of small golden yellow flower heads, each with several disc florets and a few ray florets.

This is a great landscaping choice for sandy seaside conditions.

Rubber rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa) provides year-round visual interest in waterwise and pollinator gardens. This medium-sized shrub is a member of the Sunflower family and thrives in dry regions of the Western US. "Rubber" refers to the plant's sap and "nauseosa" is a nod to its pungent scent. The plant is also sometimes called chamisa.

Rubber rabbitbrush blooms from summer into fall. The tubular flowers are golden-yellow in color. They are attractive to butterflies, bees, and other late season pollinators. Even when not in bloom, the blue-green, needlelike leaves and pale stems add color to the landscape.

As its common name implies, Seaside Daisy (Erigeron glaucus) is a perennial plant in the Daisy family that grows on the coastline of California and also north into coastal Oregon. This cheerful plant has a long flowering season, which can be prolonged by deadheading spent flowers. It blooms profusely in shades of lavender and pink, with large yellow centers. The flowers are attractive to butterflies and bees.

Seaside Daisy is a sturdy, low-growing plant. It has very low water needs, especially when planted in coastal areas, where no irrigation is needed once it is established. When planted inland or in containers, some supplemental water is beneficial. Plant in sunny areas as a groundcover or part of a pollinator garden where it has room to spread.

Several cultivars are available. Wayne Roderick introduced two of the most common: Erigeron 'Wayne Roderick' and Erigeron 'W.R.' The 'Wayne Roderick' cultivar has dark purple flowers,and 'W.R.' is more heat tolerant, making it a good choice for inland gardens.

Cape sebastian seaside Daisy is the smallest of the seaside daisies which makes it an ideal plant for small gardens, containers, borders and butterfly gardens. In spring, summer and into fall this compact flower will have plentiful daisy type blooms, 1" diameter, lavender petals with yellow centers. Some supplemental irrigation in summer will keep this plant looking it's best. Feel free to dead head the flowers and cut back the flower stems to about 1" in winter after flowering. This plant will tolerate sand and also does well in clay soils. We have found Cape sebastian to take cold temperatures down to about 12F and tolerate summer heat. On the coast plant in sun or light shade, inland you will need to provide at least afternoon shade. Horticultural selection from Erigeron glaucus. This is a compact evergreen shrub with gorgeous lavender-purple flowers 1" diameter produced over an extended period. This useful, small daisy provides masses of flower color for mixed borders, rock gardens, coastal bluff gardens, containers or as a small scale groundcover. Dead head the spent flowers for best appearance and longer bloom. Provide some partial shade inland in the summer months. The butterflies will love you for providing this plant! There is some confusion between the 'Wayne Roderick' and 'WR' varieties of Beach Aster. We find that the 'WR' is lower growing with smaller, aster-like leaves and its flowers are held on longer stalks.

California yerba santa (Eriodictyon californicum) is an evergreen shrub in the Borage family hat grows in central and northern California and parts of Oregon. It is commonly found in chaparral, woodlands, and forested areas, thriving in dry, rocky soils. This hardy plant spreads by underground rhizomes, often forming dense thickets that compete with nearby vegetation.

The plant’s long, narrow leaves, which can grow up to six inches, are coated in a sticky resin and often dusted with black fungi. The leaves emit a strong, bitter scent considered unpleasant by most and are generally avoided by animals. In late spring to summer, California yerba santa produces clusters of small, bell-shaped flowers that range from white to light purple, providing nectar for native pollinators.

Traditionally, this plant is valued for its medicinal uses by Indigenous peoples, including as a remedy for respiratory issues and skin conditions. However, it can be aggressive in the garden, so care should be taken to manage its spread.

Eriodictyon crassifolium, or thick-leaved Yerba Santa, is a shrub in the Borage family (formerly in the Hydropyllaceae or Waterleaf family). It is endemic to California, where it grows in several types of habitats in the coastal and inland hills and mountains below 6,000 ft., mainly in the southern part of the state. It is a hairy to woolly shrub growing one to three meters tall. The leaves are up to 17 centimeters long by 6 wide, gray-green with a coat of woolly hairs, and sometimes toothed along the edges. The lavender, bell shaped flowers consisting of 5 fused petals are held in a cluster at the top of the upright stems. There are two recognized varieties; var. crassifolium and var. nigrescens, but they are quite similar in appearance. A closely related species is E. trichocalyx which is lower growing, has less hairy leaves and a more hairy calyx. All local members of this genus are fire followers.

Eriogonum arborescens is a species of wild buckwheat known by the common name Santa Cruz Island buckwheat. This shrub is endemic to the Channel Islands of California.

The stems bear narrow, fuzzy green leaves at the ends of the branches. The bush erects clusters of densely clustered, frilly flowers. Each flower is tiny, very light pink in color, with nine protruding stamens. The flowers turn brown as they age. The bark is red and ribbony.

This is an uncommon plant in its native range on a few of the Channel Islands. It has also been planted as highway landscaping and in gardens on mainland California, where the shrub is not native.

Santa Cruz Island Buckwheat is easy to grow. Plant on dry, well drained shallow slopes or flats, and surround with plenty of mulch or rocks. It's extremely drought tolerant, and after the first two years should need no supplemental summer water. Even when drought-stressed in the summer, the plant looks beautiful, turning a beautiful silvery green color as the soil dries out.

Eriogonum cinereum is a species of wild buckwheat known by the common names coastal buckwheat and ashyleaf buckwheat. This shrub is endemic to the coastline of California, where it grows on beaches and bluffs and in coastal scrub and chaparral. This plant may reach up over a meter in height and width and is light silvery gray in color due to the woolly hairs on its stems and foliage. The leaves are wavy-edged ovals one to three centimeters long. The flower clusters stick out from the plant, each with one to several heads of tiny tightly-packed frilly flowers which are usually light brownish-pink in color and quite hairy. This is the foodplant for Euphilotes bernardino, the Bernardino dotted blue butterfly.

Arrow Leaf Buckwheat (Eriogonum compositum var. compositum) is a native perennial herb that grows in central and northern California. It tends to grow in gravelly places, at elevations from 0-8200 feet.

California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) is a shrub with a variable appearance, forming a patchy, compact bramble or a spreading bush. The leaves are leathery, woolly on the undersides, and rolled under along the edges. Profuse clusters of pink to white and cream-colored flowers appear as early as March and dry to a pretty red rust color.

Once established, no water is needed but the plant can tolerate occasional summer water. Warriner Lytle Buckwheat, Eriogonum fasciculatum 'Warriner Lytle', is a low horticultural selection of the perennial soft woody shrub species Eriogonum fasciculatum (California Buckwheat). This tough and drought tolerant native cultivar combines the hardiness and habitat value of the species, with the garden versatility of its selected low-growing form. This dependable groundcover plant is adaptable and easy to grow.

Warriner Lytle Buckwheat can reach 1-2' high but is often more prostrate. Its arching branches can spread 4'-5' wide. Fine dark-green, needle-like green leaves are topped in the summer by globe shaped clusters of pinkish-white to cream flowers, that then age to a rusty red-brown in late summer or autumn. It adds floral color to the summer native garden, and is a major draw in butterfly, pollinator, and bird habitat gardens. This low buckwheat makes a good ground cover, or an accent plant beside patios and pathways for enjoying the blooms and many butterflies they attract. With its dense foliage coverage and deep roots this ground cover is good for erosion control, slope stabilization, suppressing weed germination, and dry hot slopes.

California Buckwheats are a favorite nectar source for many butterfly species, native leaf cutter bees, and honey bees. As the summer progresses into autumn the birds will flock to feed on the seeds. Warriner Lytle Buckwheat will tolerate almost any soil type, including clay when planted on slopes or raised mounds, and take summer's high heat. Leafy California Buckwheat, (Eriogonum fasciculatum var. foliolosum), is one of the four recognized varieties of this widespread species, and the one most often seen in populated areas of southern California. However, it is fairly common throughout central and southern California along the coast and on western side of the peninsular range, where it grows on dry slopes, washes and canyons, at elevations from sea level to 5,200 feet.

This plant is tough and easy to grow, even in very dry conditions. Plant in a well draining sunny site. It shouldn't need supplemental water after established, but it will tolerate occasional summer water better than most extremely drought tolerant California natives. Form is is variable, ranging from more often open and upright in the foothills, to often dense and mounding closer to the coast. As the plant ages, it often develops a beautiful ropy red, brown and gray ropy woody trunk and interesting twisting structure. Produces profuse pink to white and cream-colored flowers as early as March that dry to a pretty red rust color as the soil dries. It sheds its dried flowers and significant portion of its small blade-like leaves each dry season, and is an important plant for creating natural mulch. California Buckwheat has several recognized varieties that are found in different ecoregions. This variety (var. polifolium) is a smaller and grayer buckwheat, commonly found in the Sonora and Mojave deserts, although its ranges covers the southern California foothills as well. It grows in southern and central California, as well as outside of the state, on dry slopes and washes and canyons, at elevations from 200-7500 feet. It is both more heat tolerant and more cold tolerant.

This is a great plant for natural landscapes especially in the foothills and deserts in its wide natural range. The gray foliage of Interior Buckwheat is striking mixed in with green of Coastal California Buckwheat,and is great plant for attracting birds, pollinators and other wildlife. Plant in full sun in a well draining site, and avoid direct summer water once established. Very tough and easy to grow, but tends to grow more slowly than the coastal variety.

St. Catherine's lace (Eriogonum giganteum) is large and showy buckwheat endemic to the Channel Islands of California. It flowers densely, in carpets of clustered tiny pinkish white flowers. Young flower heads are white and lacy, gradually turning to warm, reddish brown over the summer. This plant is fast-growing and variable in size, from 2 feet tall and wide to a sprawling or rounded bush over 9 feet high and wide. One variety, the Santa Barbara Island buckwheat, is particularly rare so should not be planted next to wildlands, especially in areas where it can hybridize with natural populations of cross-compatible species of Eriogonum.

In the garden, the plant likes fast-draining, preferably rocky, soil and regular water until it is established. It is clay tolerant when drainage is fast. It grows in full sun and adapts to high inland temperatures but does not do well in frost. Cut back after bloom.

The UC Davis Arboretum named this wildlife-friendly plant one of its "All-Stars" for use in California landscapes. It supports honey bees, native bees, birds and small mammals and hosts a likely total of 12 species of butterfly and moths.

Coast Buckwheat (Eriogonum latifolium) is a shrub-like perennial in the Buckwheat family (Polygonaceae). It has oval, wooly white-green leaves with small, pink and white flowers in round clusters at the ends of long, wooly stems. The flowers fade to an attractive copper color in the fall.

Also known as Seaside Buckwheat, it naturally grows on coastal bluffs and slopes, where it receives full sun and all of its water from fog and rainfall.

In the garden, plant Coast Buckwheat on rocky slopes, in crevices, or sunny rock walls. When planted in its natural range, it will not need additional summer water after its first year. Provide part shade and some supplemental water when planted away from the immediate coast.

Coast Buckwheat supports many pollinators, and is an important food source for butterflies and moths. Allowing the flower stalks to remain through winter provides seeds for hungry birds.

Nude buckwheat (Eriogonum nudum) is a perennial shrub in the wild buckwheat family  that features a striking, upright form. It has a basal rosette of flat green leaves from which tall, bare stems rise, reaching up to six feet. At the top of these stems, rounded clusters of white, pale pink, or yellow flowers bloom, adding delicate color to the landscape.

This adaptable plant has one of the widest ecological distributions of all buckwheats. It thrives in environments ranging from wet coastal areas to the cold, dry elevations of the Sierra Nevada. While the species is generally common, certain varieties are rare.

Nude buckwheat is easy to grow and looks especially beautiful when planted in groups for a massed effect. Cascading mounds of pale pink and white flowers make sea cliff buckwheat (Erigonum parvifolium) an attractive feature of a native hillside or pollinator garden. Found on coastal cliffs in Southern and Central California, sea cliff buckwheat is also a useful selection for the home garden. It is sometimes called dune or coast buckwheat.

Sea cliff buckwheat grows in mounds up to 3 ft in width and height. This plant provides good coverage and erosion control for sloped landscapes. Alone or planted in clusters, it's also at home in rock gardens, containers, borders, and as a lawn replacement.

The small evergreen leaves are dark green, accented with a reddish tint. During the long flowering season, the blooms change from a delicate pinkish-white to a rusty brown. The blooms are an important food source for many native butterflies and moths, including endangered species such as the El Segundo Blue butterfly. 

Sea cliff buckwheat grows in full sun at the coast, but can benefit from some shade in hot inland areas. Water needs are low. Once a month watering is sufficient after the plant is established. Prune back in early spring, before flower buds appear. Deadheading is not recommended because the spent flowers provide seeds for birds and extra shade for the plants in hot weather.

Sulphur buckwheat (Eriogonum umbellatum) is an attractive small perennial with cute spoon-shaped leaves and bright yellow to creamy yellow flowers. This species has many varieties. It may form a small clump with rosettes of silver-green foliage and flowers to 4 inches tall, or a sprawling shrub approaching 7 feet high and wide.  It is fast growing and flowers in summer.

Sulphur buckwheat grows in full to part sun and prefers well-draining, rocky, acidic soil. It is drought-adapted, and an important pollinator plant, hosting a likely total of 37 species of butterfly and moth.

Golden yarrow (Eriophyllum confertiflorum) is a flowering plant in the daisy family that is highly variable and can be an annual, a perennial or a small shrub.  Golden yarrow is part of a number of plant communities, including chaparral, coastal sage shrub, and southern oak woodland.

 It grows in large clumps of many erect stems, often as high as 2 feet high and 2 feet wide. It has lacy silver foliage.  At the top of each stem is a flower cluster of up to 30 flower heads, each bright golden yellow.  The long blooming season from winter to summer makes this plant welcome in the garden. Cutting the dead flower heads extends the bloom.

IT is not to be confused with Yellow Achillea which is a European import. Golden yarrow is very attractive to pollinators, especially butterflies.

Seaside Woolly Sunflower (Eriophyllum staechadifolium) is a native perennial herb in the Asteraceae (Sunflower) family that grows primarily along the coast from Santa Barbara County northward to Oregon and on the Channel Islands. It tends to grow in dunes and coastal scrub at elevations under 300 feet. The grey-green leaves are deeply lobed and have rolled-under edges. The shape of the leaves resembles a lizard when viewed from above, hence the common name "Lizard Tail". The flower heads consisting of both ray and disk florets are yellow and showy. Drought tolerant but healthier looking with occasional summer water.

Scarlet monkeyflower is a herbacious perennial in the lopseed family. It is an attractive plant which bears red or orange-red flowers and toothed, downy leaves. It is native to the southwestern United States and Baja California. It is typically found in wetlands or moist areas. It can take full sun but seems to do better with part shade. It is sometimes used as a garden plant for its blooms, which attract hummingbirds. It is a fairly large, spreading, attractive plant which bears strongly reflexed, nectar-rich red or orange-red flowers and toothed, downy leaves. It is native to the West Coast and Southwestern United States and Baja California, and is generally found at low elevation in moist areas. Occasional populations of yellow-flowered Erythranthe cardinalis (which lack anthocyanin pigments in their corollas) are found in the wild.

Erythranthe cardinalis is cultivated in the horticulture trade and widely available as an ornamental plant for traditional gardens; natural landscape, native plant, and habitat gardens; and various types of municipal, commercial, and agency sustainable landscape projects. Cultivars come in a range of colors between yellow and red, including the "Santa Cruz Island Gold" variety, originally collected from Santa Cruz Island off the coast of California.

Seep Monkey Flower (Erythranthe guttata syn. Mimulus guttatus) is a perennial wildflower in the Lopseed family (Phrymaceae). As the name suggests, it grows in moist stream banks and seeps. Often it will grow with its roots submerged, and the light green foliage and yellow flowers will float on the surface of the water. Its spreading root systems make it one of the best plants for filtering water in aquatic gardens, and its abundant yellow snapdragon-shaped flowers add spectacular color to a pond in winter and spring. Note that because it aggressively spreads and copiously self seeds, it may need to be periodically pulled or cut back to prevent it from crowding out other plants.

Seep Monkey Flower attracts bees, butterflies and moths. Useful in naturally wet landscapes, such as a moist alpine meadow, along any sort of waterway, and in serpentine soils.

Erythranthe lewisii (Lewis' Monkeyflower or Great Purple Monkeyflower) is a perennial herb in the Phrymaceae (Lopseed) family. It is native to western North America from Alaska to California to Colorado, where it grows in moist habitat such as streambanks at elevations between 5,000 and 10,000 ft. In California it is found primarily in the Sierras. It is named in honor of Meriwether Lewis. This is a mountain species that requires higher elevations, snow in winter, cool temperatures in summer, and plenty of water. The flowers are attractive to hummingbirds. This would be a nice plant if your garden is in Mammoth Lakes or Truckee.

The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is the state flower of California. Every garden can find a place for this easy, cheerful annual. It self-seeds freely and will give your whole neighborhood poppies, but is not particularly invasive. 

The plant grows in full sun but will tolerate part shade. It reaches one to two foot tall and can be perennial in milder areas. The feathery foliage is blue-green The flowers range from yellow to bright orange, appearing from February to September, though primarily in spring. The petals may remain closed in cloudy weather. The fruit is a slender capsule which splits to release numerous small black or dark brown seeds. The seeds are ready to take when the pods become dry and brown. Birds, butterflies, bees and other pollinators are attracted to this plant. Rabbits may browse the leaves but it is deer resistant.

It is best introduced into the garden from seed sown in fall at the start of the rainy season. Do not cover the seeds with soil or mulch. California poppies like fast draining soil and plenty of sunshine but are very hardy and will also thrive in poor soil conditions, such as clay. If planting from seedlings, be careful with the long sensitive roots and water occasionally until established.

Champagne California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica 'Champagne') is an annual or perennial with ruffled semi-double flower cups in shades of apricot peach and pink that fade to a creamy champagne hue. Its grey-green ferny foliage complements these colors. This member of the Papaveraceae or poppy family grows widely in grassland across California, and in Oregon and Baja California. 

California poppies are easy to grow from seed. They can prosper in poor soil and with little water. To maintain as a perennial, avoid watering once leaves begin to dry out. Cut back dead growth to the ground once you see a flush of new growth. The plants will self-sow if they are left in place.

California poppies are deer resistant and attract pollinators.
